Goal:
The goal of our project was to learn more about woodworking through the creation of a table. We spent about two and a half weeks to design, create, and finish the table. Design Proposal: We want to create a table with a footrest, basketball hoop, and possible a pencil sharpener. We looked at the size of the size of the other tables in the room for a reference for the dimensions of the table. Materials: A large, relatively thin and flat piece of wood for the tabletop. Four table leg-sized pieces of wood. 1 piece of wood as long as the tabletop, and 2 pieces of wood as wide as the table (width being the smaller length). Build Process: We started with measuring the lengths of the wood so we could mark and later cut the wood at the lengths needed for the table. We first started with cutting trimming a piece of plywood for the tabletop. We then marked and cut the wood for the front and back of the table. We then cut the wood for the legs and for the wood connecting the legs together. We finished with the wood for the footrest, but it ended up being a few inches too short so we extended it slightly using a small piece of wood. The biggest issue we had was when we ended up cutting off part of the tabletop when trying to cut out the hole for the basketball hoop. We ended up using a different piece of wood that was already a good size. Finally we assembled the base of the table and attached the tabletop. We then put the stain on the base and the top of the table. After that dried we put the finish on the tabletop sanded it, and did it once more. Conclusion: The table will be tested through the use of it in the classroom. The table uses the original design of the table other than the fact that the basketball hoop is on the left side rather than the center due to the center support beam. Overall the project was a success, but if I were to do it again I would make it an inch of two taller. Original Design Proposal: 1) Jonathan Cizerza , Alex Racel, Bryce Pyburn 2) We need a large, relatively thin and flat piece of wood for the tapletop. Four table leg-sized pieces of wood. 1 piece of wood as long as the tabletop, and 2 pieces of wood as wide as the table (width being the smaller length). We will also use various pieces of scrapwood for the rest. 3) We hope that the project can be completed either the week after we get back, or two weeks after. We have the drawing planned out, but these things seem to always take longer than I'd expect (so probably 2 weeks after the break). 4) I attached the diagram below. |
